Chelsea 1 Spurs 1

August 31, 2008

Chelsea had the edge in the opening half and were rewarded when Juliano Belletti fired them in front. However Spurs got a lucky break to level in first half stoppage time through Bent.

Juande Ramos’ side defended well in the second half to keep Chelsea at bay as they failed to engineer any clear-cut chances to win it and maintain their 100% start to the season.

In a lively opening few minutes Frank Lampard very nearly opened the scoring with a fantastic chip on six minutes which had Heurelho Gomes at full stretch to tip over his own crossbar.

Following a lull in the action the game burst into life midway through the half when Belletti found Nicolas Anelka with a great cross and the French striker got between two defenders before uncharacteristically firing over the bar from close range when he should really have scored.

A minute later Michael Essien smashed the crossbar with a fierce 30-yard drive which Jonathan Woodgate cleared behind for a corner. From Deco’s flag-kick Bent made a complete mess of trying to clear and just diverted it towards his own goal where Belletti was on hand to convert from close range.

Chelsea looked comfortable in the lead but were stunned right on half time when Lamprd inadvertently diverted an attempted pass from Luka Modric straight into the path of Bent who coolly finished past Blues keeper Petr Cech.

Arsenal 3 v Newcastle 0

August 30, 2008

Dutch striker Robin van Persie scored twice, once from the penalty spot, with Denilson getting the third for the Gunners in a match that will be remembered as much for Joey Barton’s cameo appearance as for the supreme football played by Arsene Wenger’s side.

Scoring looked an inevitability for the home side virtually from the kick-off, with captain William Gallas shooting over the bar from two yards out as early as the third minute, but their reward for complete domination of possession came from the penalty spot after 18 minutes.

Emmanuel Adebayor’s cross hit the outstretched arm of Charles N’Zogbia, and referee Rob Styles immediately pointed to the spot. Shay Given guessed the right direction but Van Persie’s penalty was too powerful and it flew past the Irish keeper into the sidenetting.

The Dutch striker scored his second of the game and only his third Arsenal goal of an injury-plagued 2008 when he capped off a move more representative of his team’s play.

Again it was Adebayor who put in the telling cross, this time a cut-back ball for Emmanuel Eboue. The midfielder - starting ahead of Theo Walcott - mis-controlled with his first touch when shooting could have been an option, but he rescued the situation with a cheeky backheel that Van Persie slid in to fire into the roof of the net from close range.

If the match could ever have been called a contest, it was ended as such on the hour mark when Denilson wrapped up another fine Arsenal move that involved Samir NasrI and Adebayor to make it 3-0.

Newcastle were struggling with injuries to the extent that manager Kevin Keegan was forced to start an unfit Shola Ameobiup front with owen and teenage trio Ben Tozer, Ryan Donaldson and Nile Ranger on the bench

The Latics made an explosive start to lead 2-0 after 14 minutes. Sam Ricketts sliced a corner into his own net on five minutes, while Antonio Valencia scored Wigan’s second when he raced clear from the halfway line to slot the ball under Boaz Myhil.

Wigan sealed victory on 63 minutes when Valencia’s cross from the right was converted by new signing Amr Zaki, with Emile Heskey scoring the fourth five minutes later after rounding the goalkeeper.

And the impressive Zaki sealed the rout on 75 minutes when his pile-driver from 15 yards cannoned in off the underside of the bar.

West Ham 4 v Blackburn 1

West Ham United eased the pressure on boss Alan Curbishley with a 4-1 win over Blackburn Rovers at Upton Park.

The Hammers made the perfect start when Julien Faubert’s corner was headed in by Calum Davenport on 12 minutes.

Eight minutes later they looked to be cruising to victory when Mark Noble’s weak shot was deflected in off Christopher Samba for an own goal.

But Rovers got themselves back into the match with their next attack when Jason Roberts spun past Davenport and tucked the ball past Robert Green.

Matt Derbyshire, who came on for the injured Roque Santa Cruz, thought he had scored Rovers’ equaliser but it was controversially ruled out for offside on the half hour mark.

The second-half was equally frenetic with Rovers awarded a penalty but Robert Green saved Roberts’ spot-kick.

Despite being outplayed for much of the half, substitute Craig Bellamy sealed victory in stoppage time with a clinical finish to make it 3-1.

And with seconds remaining, Carlton Cole struck home the fourth to give the Hammers their second win of the season.
