5216909 Arsenal will take a narrow lead into the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Roma after a 1-0 victory at The Emirates.Robin Van Persie’s penalty was all Arsenal could show for their dominance in their last-16 first-leg tie.

The Dutchman fell under Philippe Mexes’s challenge, but his clinically- placed spot-kick was not added to.Samir Nasri controlled the midfield but Emmanuel Eboue and Nicklas Bendtner missed the target when clean through. Roma struggled, though Marco Motta’s thunderous drive forced a fine save.

Arsenal should have been further ahead early in the second half when Samir Nasri and Van Persie opened up the Roma defence, but Bendtner, unmarked and in front of goal, lifted his shot over the bar.Doni made a diving save to keep out a low shot from Abou Diaby and then Eboue should have punished Loria’s misplaced header but waited too long to shoot and eventually missed the target.

Riise, who won the title with Liverpool four years ago, almost tied it with a low, angled shot that flashed wide of the far post as the game opened up into an end-to-end confrontation.

The second leg of the first knockout round is March 11 in Rome
