Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had named a side with an average age of just 19 – and was not disappointed as a goal from 16-year-old Jack Wilshere added to a hat-trick from Carlos Vela and a double by Nicklas Bendtner to outclass the Coca-Cola Championship side.Wenger fielded a starting XI including seven teenagers and five players making their first-team debut.
Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski at 23 was the most senior player in their starting line-up.
Their inexperience didn’t matter as they stormed into three goal lead inside the first-half with Nicklas Bendtner scoring twice and Mexican striker Carlos Vela adding a brilliant third on the stroke of half-time.
By that stage the game was up and the visitors – who fielded a near full-strength side – must have hoped that Arsenal’s young players would take their foot off the gas, but instead they kept going adding two more in the second–half to cap a truly wonderful performance.
Vela got his second of the night before 16-year-old Jack Wilshere got a fifth.
Vela rounded off the night when he completed his hat-trick in the 87th minute to make it six.
It could have been even more but Paddy Kenny in the Sheffield United goal made a string of saves as the future of Arsenal seems to be in very good hands.
