Game ended in a draw as arsenal gave Arshavin his first game but yet another home draw is not good enough for the arsenal who now have dropped more home points .Wenger’s side dominated possession for much of the game, the hosts struggled to break down a well organised Sunderland team, who themselves threatened several times on the break.Sunderland were struggling to get on the ball, while Arsenal looked in the mood to close on the gap on the top four. But in their eagerness to make their early advantage tell, the Gunners began to leave themselves vulnerable to the counter-attack

But it was an encouraging start for Arshavin, who was heavily involved in much of the Gunners’ attacking play during the opening period. He  almost scored twice in the first 15 minutes, shooting just wide and then seeing a drive well saved. He eventually faded after the break and was withdrawn to rapturous applause just after the hour mark.

The succession of missed chances consigned Arsenal to their third successive goalless draw in the league,Carlos Vela, William Gallas and Van Persie all missed late chances

The result saw Arsenal move to within six points of Aston Villa, who occupy the fourth Champions League place after slipping to defeat to Chelsea earlier in the day, but the frustrated groans from the stands at full-time indicated the home crowd saw it as a case of two points lost, rather than one gained
