John Carew’s strike gave Villa a deserved draw in the first leg of their Uefa Cup last 32 clash with CSKA.
The visitors took the lead when Vagner Love played a neat one-two with Yuri Zhirkov before powering through and slotting into the bottom corner (14).
The hosts battled back and Craig Gardner hit the bar moments before pulling the ball back for Carew to rifle past Igor Akinfeev
Alexei Berezutski could have doubled CSKA’s lead after 67 minutes when he found himself with only goalkeeper Brad Guzan to beat, but he pushed his shot wide.
It proved a costly miss because Villa was back on level terms inside two minutes.
Gardner chased down a cross from Young which flew across the box, and turned it back to Norwegian striker Carew, who found the net with a first-time drive.
