Coach Pim Verbeek said his side’s 1-0 defeat to a no-name Kuwait team at Canberra Stadium last night was the lesson his A-League players needed to learn.Verbeek’s Australian-based team fumbled its way around the field in front of 20,032 fans in a disappointing Asian Cup qualifying match.

Ranked 98 places below the Socceroos, Kuwait shocked Australia with a 37th minute header providing the winning goal.

Despite the sluggish performance Verbeek was measured in his criticism of his squad.

The coach labelled Archie Thompson and Danny Allsopp’s performance ”absolutely hopeless” following the 0-0 draw against Indonesia in January.Since starting his stint with the Socceroos, Verbeek has voiced his preference to include European-based stars over the A-League playersThe Kuwaiti team, staff and fans rejoiced as one when the final whistle blew, with the players erupting into song and dance on the field.

The team ranked 125th in the world stunned the Socceroos and their fans when it opened the scoring eight minutes before half-time.Kuwaiti defender Mesaed Alenzi headed the ball past goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic to give his team the shock win!
