Awesome Bolt smashes record

Jamaica’s Usain Bolt destroyed the field and broke the world record as he cruised to Olympic 100m glory in Beijing.

Bolt’s performance was simply incredible as he bettered his own world record by three hundredths of a second to set a new benchmark of 9.69seconds, despite easing up and celebrating his win 10m from the finishing line.

Trinidad’s Richard Thompson upset the odds to clock 9.89seconds to take the silver, with American Walter Dix claiming bronze.

Former world-record holder Asafa Powell had been tipped to provide the stiffest test for his countryman but he could only manage fifth place as six of the finalists ran under 10 seconds.

“I wasn’t worried about the world record. I didn’t know it until I’d done my victory lap,” Bolt told BBC Sport.

“When I ran the earlier round I felt the world record, because it’s a new track, it’s fast. But I came out here just to win. I’m so happy for myself and my country.

“Me and my coach, we decided that I can take both the 100m and 200m. So I came here prepared to do that.”
