Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the Ballon d’Or today. Ronaldo was the front runner to win, after scoring 42 goals in last season as Manchester United won both the Premier League and the Champions League.Lionel Messi was 2nd, with Fernando Torres came 3rd.
The Manchester United ace became the third Portuguese player to have won it after the Inter man and the legendary Eusebio.
The Madeira-born winger scooped the prestigious award on Tuesday morning to make history for his country and join two legends of the game.
Figo is delighted and proud of his successor and he sent a special message to Ronaldo from Inter’s Appiano Gentile training ground.
“I am full of pride and happiness that the Ballon d’Or went to Cristiano Ronaldo,” Figo is quoted as saying on Tuttomercatoweb.com.
“He is the third player in the history of Portuguese football to have conquered it after Eusebio in 1965 and myself in 2000.”
