United had dominated possession before the break and Michael Carrick’s long-range effort in the 12 minute had drawn a good save from Arikan
Nicolas Anelka’s strike sealed a winning European debut for Carlo Ancelotti at Stamford Bridge tonight which ended Chelsea 1 FC Porto 0.
Anelka curled past the recovering Helton after his initial powerful shot was parried before the Porto keeper kept out Salomon Kalou’s header and Branislav Ivanovic thumped over.
Petr Cech stopped a Silvestre Varela volley but Porto struggled and Fernando earned a second booking in injury time to see red.
Real Madrid are among the favourites to win the Champions League this season and ronaldo was again on target tonight to help them get the win, while Bayern Munich also took maximum points.
Wolfsburg and AC Milan also got past tricky ties, while Juventus were held by Bordeaux and Atletico Madrid were unable to see off APOEL with a draw on the night.
