premiership-scores First day of the Premiership and what a start here are the main highlights of the day.

Blackburn 0 Manchester City 2

City started with a win despite a strong fight from Blackburn.

Shaun Wright-Phillips set up Emmanuel Adebayor to fire home but Rovers dominated the first half and Shay Given and Richard Dunne were forced to deny Chris Samba and Jason Roberts.

Blackburn keeper Paul Robinson made fine saves from Robinho and sub Carlos Tevez before Stephen Ireland coolly slotted in a late second .

Aston Villa 0 Wigan 2 stunning strike sent Wigan on their way to a fine victory.

Hugo Rodallega’s

Rodallega had a header cleared off the line before opening the scoring  with a looping long-range strike after Nicky Shorey’s misplaced header.

Jason Koumas doubled the lead with a cool finish after a good run from Charles N’Zogbia  and Titus Bramble’s goalline clearance prevented Ashley Young pulling back a late goal.

Bolton 0 Sunderland 1

Summer signing Darren Bent marked his Premier League debut for Sunderland with a crucial winning goal.

The £10m hitman, who moved to the North East from Spurs, quickly opened his account when he headed in a cross from Steed Malbranque at the far post (5).

Kieran Richardson and Bent went close to a second, while Gary Cahill drew a reaction save from Cats keeper Marton Fulop. Kevin Davies hit the bar.

Portsmouth 0 Fulham 1

Striker Bobby Zamora was able to claim a fortuitous goal as Fulham made a winning start to the new season.

Clint Dempsey’s speculative 25-yard shot struck Zamora on the back and spun past keeper David James .

Zamora, who turned down a summer move to Hull, was denied a second when James tipped over his far-post header, while the home side saw Frederic Piquionne fire wide from close range.


Stoke 2 Burnley 0

Burnley were well beaten on their top-flight return as Stoke’s set-pieces came to the fore.

Ryan Shawcross headed in Liam Lawrence’s free-kick and a Rory Delap long throw was turned into his own net by Stephen Jordan .

Ricardo Fuller had a header cleared off the line and Abdoulaye Faye and Jordan were lucky to escape red cards before Stoke sub Dave Kitson hit the crossbar.

Wolves 0 West Ham 2

Wolves were comfortably beaten on their first day back in the Premier League.

Mark Noble clipped home a fine opener for the visitors from 20 yards after good work by England forward Carlton Cole to create the chance.

Wolves improved and Robert Green denied Sylvan Ebanks-Blake but Kevin Foley cleared Jack Collison’s effort off the line and Matthew Upson headed the second from Noble’s corner

Team of the day: Arsenal thumping 5 past everton away!
