Here is the top 10 footballers we think this year who have dazzled the world of football in a year to remember.

The FIFA World Player of the year 2009 was inarguably the best football player this year also. He helped his national team Argentina reach the Quarter-finals in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and his club record for Barcelona this year is also scintillating. He is joint leader of the scoring charts in the La Liga with 17 goals already this season. At only 22, he has a long way to go and we can expect many more miracles out of this wonder-boy.

Joint leader in the scoring charts of the La Liga with Lionel Messi at 17 goals, Cristiano Ronaldo has charmed his way into the hearts of Real Madrid fans. The Portuguese international had a huge role to play in his country’s foray in the World Cup. His curling free kicks and brilliant dribbling skills have undone many a defenders in the recent years. Since his rise at Manchester United, Ronaldo has never really touched a low.

The 25 year old Dutchman contributed tremendously towards taking his country to the finals of the World Cup this year by scoring four goals in the process. He won the Bronze Boot in the tournament, and also the Silver Ball. He currently plays for Inter Milan as an attacking midfielder and he has also been shortlisted for the FIFA 2010 Ballon d’Or.

The Spanish playmaker features on this list for his consistent form for his club and country. The 2010 World Cup winner with his country, he was also shortlisted for the Golden Ball award which was eventually won by Uruguayan Diego Forlan. He has also been influential for his club Barcelona as an attacking midfielder where he has come through the junior ranks. He is one of the three finalists for the FIFA 2010 Ballon d’Or.

Another Spaniard in the list is Xavi who has been vital in his country’s recent good fortunes in the Euro 2008 and the World Cup in 2010. The veteran midfielder is the driving force in the Barcelona midfield along with fellow Spaniard Andres Iniesta. With his superb ability to give pin-point passes and his legendary vision, he is the one who orchestrates all offensive moves for both his club and country.

The 30 year old Uruguayan forward was the major force behind his team’s excellent run in the 2010 World Cup. He scored 5 goals for his team during the entire tournament and also won the Golden Ball award beating off competition from the likes of David Villa and Wesley Sniejder. The Atletico Madrid forward also has a decent club form with whom he won the European Super Cup by beating Inter Milan 2-0.

The surprise addition to this list is 21 year old German Thomas Muller who turned heads with his exploits in the World Cup, in which he ran away with the Golden Boot and the Best Young Player award. He ended the tournament with five goals and three assists to his name. The Bayern Munich forward has had a resplendent season with his club as well, and he has already scored eight goals for his team.

8.       SAMUEL ETO’O

The Cameroon international is known for his sublime finishing skills and the ability to run past defenders with ease. In his five season for Barcelona, he scored a record 108 goals and led them to three league trophies within that time. Currently playing for Inter, he is almost as influential if not more. 2010 has been as fruitful year for him as he won the UEFA Champions League, the Italian Cup and the Italian Serie A with his team. He recently won the African Footballer of the Year 2010 award, for a record fourth time in his career.

The 31 year old veteran defender for Barcelona and Spain had a wonderful year for both club and country. He has been a regular for the national team since the 2002 World Cup and is at the third position in the list of most appearances for his club. The club captain is best known for his consistency in the back line and his ability to manage his defence. Barcelona are currently on top of the La Liga table.

The 26-year old Dutchman had an excellent World Cup campaign in which he led his team to their first ever final, where they were eventually beaten by Spain. The Bayern Munich midfielder is best known for his darting runs on the left flank which blank defenders due to his speed and accuracy. His extraordinary season with Bayern Munich has resulted in him being nominated for the FIFA Puskas Award for the best goal and also the Ballon d’Or.
