Wade Elliott’s stunning goal earned Burnley their Premier League place at the expense of 10-man Sheffield United.

The winger ran from deep and, after Matt Kilgallon’s tackle on Chris McCann saw the ball break back to him, curled it past Paddy Kenny from 25 yards (13).

Fine blocks from Nick Montgomery, Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton denied them a second before United sub Jamie Ward was twice yellow-carded for handballs

Boss Owen Coyle expects Premier League life to be tough after guiding Burnley to promotion through the play-offs.

A 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Wembley returns the Clarets to the top flight after a 33-year absence.

Coyle said: “We will need to add to the squad but we’ll have terrific spirit. We’re not being delusional. If we finish fourth-bottom, it’ll be a better achievement than where we are now.”

Kevin Blackwell has threatened to resign as boss of Sheffield United after their play-off final defeat.

With the Blades’ income set to reduce by over £10m a year now the parachute payments from the Premier League have ended, Blackwell is considering whether it is worth continuing at Bramall Lane.

He said: “There is a rebuilding job to do at the club, and it might need someone different to do it.”
