All the highlights and main talking  points from tuesday’s games in the third round of the carling cup with some big names crashing out.

Stoke City 2 – 0 Fulham

A Carling Cup game that saw two clubs within the top division of the English game go head to head and as you would expect the game offered ups and downs just like we see on a weekly basis.

Overall the game seemed evenly fought, with possession figures showing exactly how equal the game was.

It was Stoke City that were to prove to be the most deadly in front of goal today, with two headed goals from Danny Higginbotham and Kenwyne Jones sealing the victory.

Sunderland 1 – 2 West Ham United

Sunderland and West Ham met in another all Premiership clash in the Carling Cup and it was West Ham United that seemed to take the advantage from early on in the game.

After piling on the pressure, West Ham were the first to score when Victor Obinna played a pass through to Frederic Piquionne who showed plenty of critics that he can score in style.

Sunderland hit back, pressing their opponents as they looked to get back into the game. They didn’t have to wait too long, six minutes later Asamoah Gyan rose to head home a Jordan Henderson corner at the near post.

West Ham headed in at half time and seemed to have found the strength to once again take the game to Sunderland, pressing from the moment that the whistle blew to signal the start of the second half.

It took West Ham only 14 minutes to get what they had been chasing, Victor Obinna putting the ball into a helpless Mignolet’s goal to sum up a great passing move.

Brentford 1- 1 Everton ( 4-3 pens)

League One hosts Brentford also caused a major upset as they held struggling Everton to a 1-1 stalemate in regular time before dumping the Toffees out 4-3 on penalties

Wolves also looked for another upset after they could only manage a 1-1 draw with Notts County inside the 90 minutes, but a Kevin Doyle aved the day with a brace helped his side recover for a 4-2 victory in extra-time.
