Best English football Soccer highlights of 2008
January 2, 2009
A look back at football in 2008 saw united win Uefa champions league, spurs win the carling cup, portsmouth the Fa Cup and much more.See all the main highlights and videos below
Cristiano Ronaldo
His narcissistic preening, on field play-acting and adolescent sulking may provoke revulsion in opposing fans but for much of last year Ronaldo was quite simply the most devastating player the Premier League had seen. With 42 goals, many from the wing, Ronaldo approached perfection and not since George Best has one player so terrified opposition defences. His summer agitation for a move to Real Madrid may have besmirched it somewhat but the achievement is astonishing.
Tottenham win the Carling Cup, Feb 24
It all looked so promising. Just months into the job as Tottenham manager and Juande Ramos had his first trophy. Spurs came from a goal down Didier Drogba¹s free-kick to win the match, courtesy of a Dimitar Berbatov penalty and an extra time header from Jonathan Woodgate. This should have been the first step in a Tottenham revival but seven months later they were bottom of the league and Harry Redknapp was arriving with the cavalry.
Portsmouth win the FA Cup, May 17
No club outside the so-called big four had won the cup since Everton in 1995 so it was refreshing to have three Championship sides in the semi-finals with Portsmouth, who had not win this competition since the outbreak of the Second World War. Kanu was the hero, scoring the only goal in both the semi against West Brom and the final against Cardiff. A superb achievement for Harry Redknapp and ultimately a parting gift to the club he had so thoroughly revitalised.
The Champions League final: Manchester United v Chelsea, May 21
High drama in Moscow as the all-English final lived up to expectations. The game kicked off in hammering rain. Ronaldo scored. Lampard levelled. Drogba punched. Ronaldo missed. Terry slipped. Van der Sar saved. Roman Abramovich¹s dream of winning the trophy eludes him at the last moment but for Sir Alex Ferguson it is a second Champions League title and proof that this team is the best he has assembled.

The Special One returns, June 2
Job offers came and went as Jose Mourinho played the Portuguese king in exile. Internazionale owner Massimo Moratti finally tempted him back into the game with the challenge of breaking English hegemony in the Champions League. Jose being Jose he gave his first press conference in fluent Italian and, as some Italian journalists observed, with a hint of a Milanese accent. It will come as no surprise that Inter swiftly established themselves at the top of Serie A.
Theo Walcott¹s hat-trick, Sept 10
Not since John Barnes stunned the Maracana has a young English winger announced his talent so spectacularly on the international stage. Croatia had not lost at home since their entry into international football and had twice beaten England in Euro 2008 qualifying. All that was forgotten as Walcott tore the Croats to pieces in the most morale-boosting England victory since the 5-1 defeat of Germany in Munich.
Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham, Oct 29
Surely the most thrilling finale to a North London derby as Harry Redknapp inspired Spurs to an incredible comeback. David Bentley, a former Arsenal player, scored probably the goal of the season to give Spurs the lead only for a bewitching Arsenal to cruise into a 3-1 lead. Darren Bent pulled one back but Robin Van Persie restored the two-goal cushion. In the dying minutes Spurs scored twice through Jermaine Jenas and Aaron Lennon to level an enthralling game.
Germany 1-2 England, Nov 19
After so many defeats at so many tournaments it is now customary for England teams and managers to be measured against the great Teutonic rivals. Fabio Capello took his team to Berlin after an excellent start to World Cup qualifying but even he could not have anticipated the ease with which an English second string outclassed the Germans. Only a Terry-Carson error gifted Germany a goal, otherwise there was only one team in it. Germany looked a spent force, England, inspired by Michael Carrick, looked like world beaters. Never before has a friendly match felt so significant.

The history of Ronaldinho a Legend
December 22, 2008
Ronaldinho was born into a family of football addicts, living in a wooden house in the heart of a favela. His father, Joao da Silva Moreira who played for an amateur club made ends meet by by working as a car park attendant at Gremio Football Club. His brother Roberto was a great hope for the club but then his career was unfortunately ended by a terrible knee injury. At the age of 8, tregedy struck as Ronaldinho’s father drowned in a swiming pool at a villa provided by Gremio for Roberto. Following in the footsteps of his brother Ronnie then joined the Gremio’s footballing school and wowed everyone there. He made it into the first team in 1997 and was being heralded as one of the best young hopes in Brazilan football. Meanwhile, he was already making the breakthrough with the national squad, and his six goals were fundamental in Brazil’s Copa America triumph in 1999.The goal Ronaldinho scored against Venezuela is remembered to this day as one of the most spectacular ever scored by a player wearing the famous Canarinha jersey.
In 2001, Ronaldinho moved on to PSG where he became a fan’s favourite with his tremendous flair and excting style of football - also contributing tremendous amounts of goals. However his employer’s still weren’t happy with his atitude and looked ot get rid of him. Of course, he continued to shine in the international arena. His finest hour came at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea, where he was a key member of the side that won Brazil’s record fifth world title - scoring in the quarter final and playing an integral role in midfield in the final. Ronaldinho then moved to Barcelona - arguably the biggest club in the world - for what now seems a bargain at £21,000,000. When he arrived, he said that his desire was to bring as much success to the club as so many Brazilians had done before him, such as Evaristo, Ronaldo, Romario and Rivaldo.Ronaldinho scored 91 goals in 200 appearances in his five seasons at the Camp Nou, and helped Barcelona to consecutive Spanish league titles in 2005 and 2006, as well as the Champions League trophy in 2006.
Having won the World Footballer of the Year title it seems he has now fulfilled that desire.Since becoming without any doubt the best player in the world for many years he moved on for one last challenge to join Ac milan in italy July 2008 and looks again reborn!Do you think this was a good move for him ?See a great video clip below off the great man from past to present
Beckham Starts Italian Adventure In Milan
December 21, 2008
England coach Fabio Capello suggested the move so the former Manchester United player stayed match fit and could still turn out for his country.
Beckham said: “I’m really happy to be here, it is a great honour. I hope to add to the team, I hope to give everything that I’ve always given in my career and it’s a huge honour.
“I’ve played for the biggest club in England, the biggest club in Spain and now I’m going to be playing for the biggest club in Italy.
“I’ve been very lucky in my career to have done that, and I’m just going to enjoy it because I think to be given this opportunity is incredible.”
His arrival at AC Milan comes at a crucial time for the club, as they are nine points adrift of rivals Inter and their form in recent weeks has been poor.
Injuries have hit the side and Beckham will move immediately into the hole left by Rino Gattuso, who is out for six months following a knee operation.
AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti even joked: ”If I could, I would play Beckham now this weekend.”
Designers, hotels, gyms, restaurants and schools in the fashion capital are falling over themselves to get a piece of what has been dubbed ‘il fenomeno Beckham’.
For his three-month stay in Milan, Beckham is said to have been given the £1,000 a night Penthouse suite of the Chedi Hotel, close to AC Milan’s San Siro stadium.During his stay in Italy, Beckham will be eligible for 10 Serie A matches as well as two UEFA games, should Ancelotti decide to name him in the European squad.Beckham will begin training with his new teammates on December 29 and hopes to be on the field for Milan’s first 2009 Serie A match, January 11, away against AS Roma.
Here is a clip from this interview do you think he will have a impact on Ac Milan?
