Charlton midfielder Zheng Zhi was in international action on Monday as China earned a 1-0 friendly win over Iran at the Qinhuangdao Olympic Stadium.

China, who held Germany to a 1-1 draw in Shanghai on Friday, took the lead just before half-time, striker Gao Lin slotting home from close range after Rong Hao’s free-kick had struck the post.

Javad Kazemian was denied an equaliser for Iran by a fine block, before China were prevented from scoring a second by the woodwork when Zheng’s inswinging free-kick from the right was headed against the crossbar by debutant He Yang in the 73rd minute.

The win gave Gao Hongbo his first victory as China coach in only his second game in charge
