David Beckham’s Top 10 greatest England memories

David Beckham is easily one of the greatest icons of the modern game that it is easy to forget that he is a pretty damn good footballer as well. You cannot be none other than that if you need to represent England for three World Cups. Here is a countdown of his greatest England memories

10. Having been frozen out of the squads by both Steve Mclaren and Fabio Capello in 2006 and 2008 respectively, Beckham fighting back bravely on both occasions to show that he was worth a place in the squad.

9. Beckham becoming the fifth Englishman to win 100 caps when he stepped out on the pitch for the friendly against France in Paris on 26 March.

8. His goal against Ecuador making him the first England player to score in three World Cups.

7. Beckham missing a penalty in a penalty shootout in the quarter-final match against Portugal in Euro 2004, a result which ultimately knocked out England.

6. Beckham receiving a red card in England’s match against Argentina, which again led to England’s failure.

5. Beckham’s promotion as the team captain by the caretaker manager Peter Taylor in 2000 following Kevin Keegan’s resignation as England manager in October.

4. Beckham making his first England appearance on 1 September 1996, in a World Cup qualifying match against Moldova.

3. Beckham scoring his first England goal against Colombia in the 1998 World Cup.

2. Beckham becoming the most capped English player in history when he came on as a substitute on 28 March 2009 in a friendly against Slovakia.

1. His pinnacle though has to be his goal against Greece in the dying moments of the game.
Considering the stakes at risk, the actual free-kick and the celebrations that followed, this is one of Beckham’s moment which will live on forever.
