England’s ‘goalkeeper situation’

May 27, 2010 | Filed Under: Blog

England’s ‘goalkeeper situation’ has been an issue for the last few managers, however, with the World Cup only a few weeks away, Fabio Capello seems to have a ‘nicer’ problem then the likes of Steve McClaren and Sven Goran Eriksson had. Last week, when the national team coach announced his provisional squad for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, he included three goalkeepers, all of whom have impressed in the Premier League this season, and all of whom could play against the USA in England’s opening fixture. But will the world cup bets be on an England win?

Firstly, there’s the stalwart David James. Having been labelled ‘calamity’ early in his career after a series of mistakes and bloopers, James found form at Portsmouth, and has since been one of the finest goalkeepers around. Despite his team being relegated to the Championship this season, James was the shining light in a team that looked down on their luck and lacking morale. After being issued with a harsh points deduction due to going into administration, Portsmouth were doomed to life in the lower divisions, however, partly thanks to James, they may well have stayed up had it not been for the penalty. West Ham’s Robert Green will also be making the trip to South Africa, and has regularly featured as England’s number one in the various friendly matches in recent years. Again, domestically, the goalkeeper didn’t have the most fruitful of seasons, and his club narrowly stayed in the top flight, despite manager Gianfranco Zola being sacked. Many expert’s ‘outsider’ to be number one at the World Cup is Manchester City’s Joe Hart, who has been on loan at Birmingham City this season. Out of the three selected players, it has probably been Hart who has been in the most inspiring form this season, and he shouldn’t be ruled out. For world cup 2010 betting odds visit Betfair.com
