Everton 2-3 Blackburn Rovers

August 16, 2008 | Filed Under: UK Box, UK Box Update

Paul Ince’s side dominated the first half from start to finish and got their reward in the 22nd minute as new club captain David Dunn curled the ball beautifully into the top corner of the net from 25 yards leaving Tim Howard with absolutely no chance.

It was not such a good day for Paul Robinson – making his Blackburn debut – as he was to blame for allowing a below-par Everton to go into the break on level terms as he was beaten at his near post by Mikel Arteta’s free-kick in injury time.

Toffees boss David Moyes must have torn into his side during the interval as they began the second half at a much higher tempo and began to dominate the play with the ever-dangerous Arteta at the heart of everthing. It was not long before the influential Spaniard stood up a cross to the far post where Yakubu was waiting to nod past Robinson on 64 minutes.

However, that sparked Ince’s side back into life and Rovers were back on terms immediately as Roque Santa Cruz capitalised on a loss of concentration by Joleon Lescott to slide the ball round the on-rushing Howard.

The game looked to be heading for a draw but in the dying seconds Ryan Nelsen rose highest to flick subsititute Tugay’s free-kick on to the post and Ooijer was first to react to the loose ball to poke it into the net and secure all three points for Blackburn and leave Everton shellshocked.
