The Manchester United defender missed the 4-0 victory over Kazakhstan as he was experiencing discomfort in a calf injury that disrupted his preparation for the Champions League final.

Coach Fabio Capello said: “We spoke with the physio at United and Rio is not OK – 100%, no.”

England coach Fabio Capello believes another goal spree against Kazakhstan can only have helped team confidence.

England are now top goalscorers among Europe’s World Cup qualifiers with 20 from six successive victories following their 4-0 win in Almaty.

Capello said: “I’m happy because goals improve mentality and confidence. The confidence is very important because we are at the end of the season.”

Frank Lampard has hailed the contribution of striker Emile Heskey since he was brought back into the England squad nearly two years ago.

Heskey’s international career looked to be over but Steve McClaren recalled him at the start of the 2007-8 campaign and he has not looked back since.

Lampard said: “He is very unselfish in the way he plays but now and again he pops up with his goals.”
