Alex Ferguson slammed his Manchester United side’s defending after the 2-0 defeat by Barcelona in the Champions League final.
Goals from Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi prevented United from becoming the first club to retain the trophy in its current format.
Ferguson said: “Our best performances this season have seen us defend well, but the defending was shoddy.
Legend Sir Bobby Charlton is confident Manchester United will continue to challenge for major honours, despite seeing them beaten by Barcelona.
The former England striker was in Rome for the Champions League showpiece, which the Catalans won 2-0.
Sir Bobby said: “We know it is going to be tough and hard even to win your own league, but the long-term plan (at the club) gives you a consistency.”
Wayne Rooney was extremely disappointed following their Champions League final defeat, but admitted Barcelona deserved to win.
United started brightly in Rome, but goals from Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi earned a 2-0 win for Barca.
Rooney said: “Against a team like Barcelona if you don’t take your chances, they will punish you. That is what happened

Ronaldo started the match up front before moving out to the wing and the Portuguese ace felt ‘everything went wrong’.
“I cannot explain,” he told RTP. “We, the players, were not well, the tactics were not good… everything went wrong.”We have to give credit to Barcelona, but they were a bit lucky to be here because Chelsea did not deserve to lose and no-one has mentioned that
