Five Footballers who LOVE a good gamble

March 12, 2015 | Filed Under: Blog

There have been many famous footballers who have enjoyed partaking in some form of gambling, either during or after their careers. In the modern era, footballers often visit casinos as a way of relaxing outside of the game. Some prefer to visit online poker websites, and many get into the card game after playing for free online. We take a look at five examples of those who have gone on to win big money from poker.

Gerard Pique

The Barcelona defender is one of the few footballers to play poker at a professional level while continuing to compete in football on a weekly basis. The Spaniard took part in the Annual World Series of Poker in 2013, while he also won over $50,000 in a tournament back in 2011. Recently, he visited Las Vegas after Spain’s World Cup exit in an attempt to get over their poor performance.

Teddy Sheringham

Sheringham enjoyed an illustrious football career, winning numerous domestic trophies as well as a UEFA Champions League success in Manchester United’s treble winning season. However, he has also gone on to be relatively successful at the poker table too. In seven years of live poker tournaments, the England international has earned over $329,000, including a fifth place finish at EPT Vilamoura in 2010.

The Brazil international had a fantastic football career, playing for the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, as well as featuring for his country in World Cup tournaments. Since retiring, he has took up poker and is regularly spotted at contests around the world, often representing Team PokerStars. It was reported in January that the Brazilian won over £30,000 at a Team PokerStars event in the Bahamas, although the competition winner would secure over £1 million.

Jan Molby

The Anfield fan favourite dominated the midfield during his time at Liverpool and, after taking on managerial roles at the likes of Kidderminster Harriers and Swansea City, has started to play poker at a serious level. The Great Dane finished 45th in the 2012 DKR 35,000 Copenhagen Main Event, and pocketed a nice $9,723 for his troubles.

Tony Cascarino

The former Chelsea striker has become a semi-professional poker player since he retired from the football pitch in 2000. During this time, the prolific striker has won over £500,000 and finished 14th in the European Poker Tour in 2007. His most lucrative win was in the 2009 GUKPT Grand Final as he scooped the top prize of £168,800.
