FC Midtjylland midfielder Jonas Borring gave the visitors the lead against the run of play at the beginning of the second half, before Portsmouth striker Theofanis Gekas equalized after a well-worked Greece move.

Denmark took the lead just four minutes into the half and against the run of play through Jonas Borring, the 24-year-old latching onto a ball from debutant Jakob Poulsen before firing across the outstretched Alexandros Tzorvas – who replaced Chalkias at half-time – in the Greek goal.

It took Greece 12 minutes to break down their opponents courtesy of an extremely well worked move, substitute Kostas Katsouranis spreading the ball intelligently to the right flank, from where the impressive Giourkas Seitaridis laid the ball back for Karagounis.

His deep, first-time cross was met at the back-post by Vasilis Torosidis, whose well-timed run was complimented by a composed volley across the face of goal, Gekas tapping into an empty net to level the scores at 1-1
