Hamburg took full control of the Uefa Cup quarter-final after recovering from Stephen Ireland’s first-minute goal to take a two-goal first leg lead.

Ireland started and finished a brillant  move created so well by robinho to put City ahead but Joris Mathijsen headed an equaliser  and Micah Richards’s handball allowed Piotr Trochowski to score from the spot .

Sub Paolo Guerrero then converted the influential Trochowski’s cross.

Hughes: It’s not over yet

Manager Mark Hughes insists Manchester City are not out of contention in their Uefa Cup quarter-final despite a 3-1 first-leg defeat away to Hamburg.

Stephen Ireland’s first-minute goal was cancelled out by Joris Mathijsen, Piotr Trochowski (pen) and Paolo Guerrero.

Hughes said: “It will be difficult to claw back but we are certainly not out of the competition. We have shown we can score goals at Eastlands.”

Jol: I wanted even more

Hamburg boss Martin Jol felt his side could have taken an even bigger lead into their Uefa Cup quarter-final second leg against Manchester City.

The Bundesliga high-fliers came from behind to take a 3-1 first-leg lead, with Piotr Trochowski inspirational.

Jol said: “I would have preferred it if we had got another goal. We know it will be difficult if they score first next week but overall I am very happy.”
