Is Goal Line Technology Long Overdue

The fight for football to adopt a new goal line technology has been a long standing battle and with FIFA taking their time over their decision to either back or throw out the suggestion of the use of the new technology it seems that the game continues to offer controversy.

During this weekend’s Premier League fixture between Chelsea and Tottenham there were two instances in which the new technology would have helped to influence the decision of the match officials after calls that the goals were not legal.

The first goal in which Frank Lampard hit a shot goalward before Spurs keeper Gomez split the ball saw the ball then head towards the goal line, the keeper getting his hand on the ball just as it was about to cross the line.

Due to the lack of technology in use within the game, the match officials ruled with the appeals of the Chelsea players, allowing the goal, which would prove to put Chelsea back into the game.

The need for goal line technology has been evident within the game for a number of years, spanning back to 1966 when Geoff Hirst scored yet another controversial goal that later ended in England winning the world cup.

One idea that might work is Hawk Eye Technology which is used in other sports use such as tennis and cricket.

Managers from all over the world have been giving their support for the introduction of a system that you indicate if a ball had crossed the goal line, eliminating any mistakes over whether a goal is scored or not but football governing body FIFA seem to want to contemplate the matter further.
