liverpool-manchester-united Liverpool lead Sunderland 2-0 at Anfield tonight and got a much needed win to keep any Premier League dreams alive.

Liverpool won for the first time in three league games to keep their floundering title hopes alive.

Striker Kenwyne Jones almost took a shock lead in the fourth minute should have put Sunderland ahead, but saw his shot blocked by keeper Jose Reina.

But the night belonged to home frontman David Ngog who marked his first league start with a goal from Steven Gerrard’s knock down which showed great vision from the skipper.

Liverpool took a stranglehold on the game – and on 65 minutes the likely-looking second goal came. Fulop in the Sunderland goal failed to hang on to both Gerrard’s long-range effort and N’Gog’s spectacular bicycle kick from the rebound, and when the ball fell to Benayoun the Israeli buried the ball into the unguarded.

Liverpool came close again with a Ryan Babel shot and a Riera free kick in the last couple of minutes, but a comfortable win in the end for liverpool.
