Liverpool lost there chance to go back to top of the table tonight in the merseyside derby.Steven Gerrard looked to have won it for the home side with a long-range strike with 21 minutes to go, a rare moment of quality in another poor performance from Liverpool.
But Cahill popped up to meet a late free-kick with a flicked header to frustrate Liverpool and dent their fading title hopes with a fourth draw in five Premier League matches at Anfield.
The draw saw Liverpool go level with Manchester United on 47 points but the champions stay top on goal difference and now have a game in hand. Everton remain sixth with 36 points
Yet despite drawing FIVE of their 11 home games, the Spaniard is still convinced the Premier League crown is going to Merseyside.
Benitez said: “I am confident — I still believe we can win the title. You have to think about the positives. In August, did we want to be in the position we are now?
“I can guarantee you that 100 per cent of our supporters would have said ‘yes’ — and I also know that we can play better. We have a lot of players coming back from injuries.
“It’s too soon to say but we are level on points with United in January, still in the FA Cup and Champions League — so we are in a good position.”
Everton manager David Moyes said: “For us to come here and give them a really good game says more about Everton than Liverpool.
“We deserved our goal and I think a draw was a fair result.”
The sides clash again on Sunday, in the FA Cup fourth round. Moyes said: “This one will have no effect on that, it’s completely different.”
