Cup shocks saw both Chelsea and Liverpool get knocked out playing at home while Manchester United marched onto the next round.( highlights below)

Liverpool blew one of their best chances of winning a trophy this season  suffering an embarrassing 4-2 penalty shootout Carling Cup defeat against League Two side Northampton at Anfield after a 2-2 draw at the end of extra-time.

Hodgson apologised to the fans after their shock exit
“These players have to accept responsibility. I accept responsibility for changing a lot of players in the team, I did it because I honestly thought the players I put on the field were good enough to win the game and they weren’t.“The obvious conclusion to that was I shouldn’t have changed that many players but we should have been strong enough to get a result.

While Newcastle United sent Premier League leaders Chelsea crashing out of the Carling Cup at the first hurdle with a great  4-3 win at Stamford Bridge.Shola Ameobi’s late strike earned Newcastle a dramatic win.

The game changed leader more times than people have hot dinners and after Patrick van Aanholt put the home side into the lead, Newcastle hit back and scored twice through a volley from Nile Ranger and a free kick from Ryan Taylor.

Shola Ameobi then added a further goal in Newcastles favour, opening the gap between the two teams to 2 goals.

Nicolas Anelka was next onto the score sheet, reducing the difference between the sides to one goal before getting the chance to level the game through a well taken penalty.

A lively game was finished off when Shola Ameobi once again managed to put the ball in the net from a corner in the dying minutes of the game.

This was a game that most people felt we couldn’t win irrespective of what side they put out,” said Hughton.

“We showed great character and great finishing to get back in the game.

Owen scored twice as Manchester United’s second team from behind to beat Championship Scunthorpe 5-2 with manager Sir Alex Ferguson, a commanding display from Manchester United saw them defeat a spirited Scunthorpe United side.

The home side took the game to Manchester United and were repaid after they opened the scoring, stunning their superior opponents in the 19th minute after Josh Wright struck and put the home side into the lead.

The deficient seemed to spur Manchester United on and that opened the flood gates for the visitors and they truly delivered on that, scoring five goals through Gibson, Smalling, Owen, Park Ji-Sung and Owen again.

The home side lost their heads towards the end of the game and it seemed like the Premiership side were toying with their opponents before Woolford was able to get a second goal for the home side in injury time but it was too little too late.

Kuszczak who had a brilliant game pulled off a number of great saves to keep Scunthorpe out as the scoreline could have been so different on the night.
