Birmingham are ready to table a bid of around £9million for Babel and, although agent Winne Haatrecht claims his client is still determined to succeed at Liverpool, he admitted they are looking at other options.
“We know that Liverpool are seriously thinking about the offer from Birmingham but we shall only consider a transfer if the clubs have an agreement,” Haatrecht told De Telegraaf.
“Then we will see how Birmingham are building their squad, what the prospects are for the club and Ryan, and perhaps, after that an interview with the manager.
“I have sent details of all the interested clubs to Liverpool. There are about five or six of them.
“In general, Ryan still wants to succeed at Liverpool but, if the club concludes that it is better he leaves, we will have to think about the next chapter
It has been reported McLeish will have up to £40m to spend, although this figure would include wages and not purely transfer money.
McLeish has guided his side to an impressive first half of the season and they are currently eighth in the Premier League table, just one point behind Liverpool
Babel, who is believed to be a target for other English clubs, would fit into Birmingham’s set-up as a left-sided frontman or midfielder.
However, it is understood he remains keen to play for a club which is in the Champions League after Liverpool made an early exit from this season’s competition.
In a question and answer session with fans on his official website a week ago, Babel indicated he wanted more support from the Anfield heirarchy
Liverpool need the funds and babel need first team football With the likes of Galatasaray, Juventus and former club Ajax all linked with the out-of-favour Reds winger, it was thought Babel would prefer a move abroad as he looks for regular, and preferably European, football to increase his chances of joining the Netherlands at next summer’s World Cup.
