Liverpool stayed in the Premier League title race with a 3-0 win at Anfield over a shambolic Newcastle side who had Joey Barton sent off .
Liverpool were without striker Fernando Torres, due to a recurrence of his hamstring injury, while Lucas, Martin Skrtel and Emiliano Insua were also out from the side that won at Hull last week.
It meant the return of skipper Steven Gerrard following a groin problem, while Daniel Agger – fresh from agreeing a new four year contract – replaced Skrtel in defence. Albert Riera and Fabio Aurelio also returned.
Yossi Benayoun and Dirk Kuyt capitalised on some woeful defending to give Liverpool a two-goal lead.The Magpies needlessly gave away possession in their own half and Alan Smith then failed to deal with Alvaro Arbeloa’s cross and Kuyt set up Benayoun to bundle in the opener (22).
Steven Gerrard’s corner then found Kuyt unmarked in the area and he easily powered home the second (28).Aurelio curled a free-kick into the area where there are three unmarked Liverpool players and one of them – Lucas – nods the ball past Harper. Embarrassingly easy Game over For all their disastrous failings, Newcastle remain just three points from safety. But on this evidence another win this season looks highly unlikely
