The Reds left it late to snatch all three points when Torres was given too much time and space to turn and shoot on 83 minutes, his effort fizzing past Craig Gordon into the bottom right hand corner.

Liverpool didn’t offer much for the majority of the game although they should have had a penalty in the first half, when Yossi Benayoun seemed to be barged to the floor by Pascal Chimbonda, however referee Alan Wiley decided to give a free kick for a foul on Steven Gerrard outside the area.

Sunderland gave it their all and had the better of the first half, the best chance falling to Daryl Murphy after good work by El Hadji Diouf, but the striker’s header from eight yards was straight at Pepe Reina.

The Black Cats could have opened the scoring soon after the break when El Hadji Diouf scuffed his effort wide from close range, following good build-up play from Murphy.

Liverpool ubstitute Xabi Alonso saw an effort from his own half drift just wide of the upright, while Gerrard’s goal-bound shot was blocked by Danny Collins. But it was Torres who proved the difference again with another match-winning goal.
