Manchester City agonisingly failed in their quest to reach the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup despite showed a brave display.

Leading 3-1 from the first-leg, Hamburg took the lead through Paolo Guerrero , before Elano scored from the spot after Piotr Trochowski handled.

Felipe Caicedo, who later had a ‘goal’ ruled out, gave City hope . Elano hit the post and Robinho went very close before Richard Dunne was sent off was sent off towards the end of the game.Hamburg suddenly stepped up the pace and Given reacted superbly to parry Olic’s effort in the 84th minute.Elano had put in a hard shift and was replaced by Daniel Sturridge a minute later.Micah Richards and Sturridge both came close but the tie ended in frustration for City. A brave fight by the blues but just not enough.

Ireland told ITV4: “We had a lot of chances and we didn’t take them, we should have been more clinical.

“I think Caicedo had a few clear-cut chances and didn’t finish them, the same with Micah Richards.”

City were outplayed in the first leg but turned things around impressively at home and Ireland has called on the Blues to ensure they secure seventh spot in the Barclays Premier League and a return to Europe.

“We have to have that spirit every week,” the Irishman added. “We have to pick ourselves up. We’ve got to get seventh if we can and not let this destroy our season.”
