The crucial moment of the game came on the stroke of half-time when Stephen Ireland gave City the lead in a half that had otherwise been even.

City broke forward and it was left to Ireland, who was making his 100th appearance for City, to convert the cross in from Johnson which was only half cut out by Danny Collins.

Wright-Phillips, who along with Didi Hamman had a good afternoon, scored his first goal on his return to City just five minutes after the break, Jo provided the ball into the box and Wright-Phillips was left with a simple tap-in from close range to double their lead.

The winger then got his second just eight minutes later, a looping ball pumped from City’s own half found the England international who ran through on goal to slide the ball past Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon to effectively seal the victory.

Other than a couple of chances in the first half, Sunderland didn’t produce many chances of note, and boss Roy Keane will be disappointed his side produced such a lacklustre second-half performance.
