O’Neill has sensationally quit the club just days before the start of the new Premier League season, with reports suggesting his decision is related to the sale of star midfielder James Milner with respect to manchester city.

An official statement from the Midlands club has confirmed O’Neill is leaving “with immediate effect” as reserve team manager Kevin MacDonald becomes caretaker manager for the opening game at home to West Ham.

O’Neill said he “will be assisting the club in the immediate short-term with regard to the handover of my duties”, although early reports suggest the decision was taken after a heated exchange with the club’s money men over their willingness to sell Milner.

“I have enjoyed my time at Aston Villa immensely.

“It’s obviously a wrench to be leaving such a magnificent club. I would like to pay tribute to the Villa players, my coaching staff and the Villa supporters for all the support and encouragement they have given both the club and me personally during my time as manager

O’Neill replaced  David O’Leary during the summer of 2006, with three consecutive top-six finishes in the league and a place in February’s League Cup final. Its a massive lost to Villa who is one of the best managers in the league so who and what next for villa?
