Mexico beat Canada 2-1 in heavy rain Wednesday for its third win in as many matches in CONCACAF third-round qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
The result put Mexico on the brink of qualifying for the next round, while leaving Canada five points behind second-placed Honduras in Group 2 with three games to play and only the top two teams to progress to the next round.
Deportivo La Coruna striker Omar Bravo, one of Mexico’s 10 European-based players, came off the bench to replace Tottenham’s Giovani Dos Santos in the second half and opened the scoring in the 59th minute.Barcelona’s Rafael Marquez made it 2-0 in the 72nd, before Milton Keynes’ Ali Gerba replied for Canada five minutes later.
