Manchester United moved one step closer to the title and heaped more misery on relegation-haunted Middlesbrough.

Ryan Giggs put the visitors ahead by cracking a low shot into the corner (25) and Park Ji-Sung sealed the win by firing across Brad Jones (51).

Middlesbrough offered little in reply, with their best chance coming in the first half when Jeremie Aliadiere drew a good save from Ben Foster

Ferguson: One step closerManchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson described his side’s 2-0 win at Middlesbrough as “a big step” towards retaining the title.

Goals from Ryan Giggs and Park Ji-sung secured victory at the Riverside.

Ferguson told Sky Sports: “I keep saying you whittle the games away until there are none left. It was a very good performance and all my players worked their socks off.”

Southgate: Time running out

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate refused to throw in the towel, despite seeing his side suffer a 2-0 home defeat by Manchester United.

Strikes from Ryan Giggs and Park Ji-Sung ensured Boro remain three points from safety with three games to go.

Southgate said: “We have got it all to do – but we have known that for some time. Our next game against Newcastle could be our last throw of the dice.”
