Middlesbrough 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

An open first half failed to produce a goal despite Middlesbrough controlling much of the game. The home side did have the ball in the back of the net when David Wheater headed in a Stewart Downing corner. However, referee Martin Atkinson deemed that Wheater had fouled Michael Dawson in making the header, although replays seemed to show that the young defender had done little wrong.

Wheater did manage to get on the scoresheet in the second half though to open the scoring, Downing whipping in a great cross which Afonso Alves managed to flick towards goal, sending it over Heurelho Gomes but onto the crossbar. The ball fell to Wheater who was left with a simple tap-in.

Boro made sure of the points five minutes from time when Mido popped up to score against his former club. The Egypt forward combined with fellow substitute Didier Digard, whose effort was heading wide before Mido slid in to direct it home.

Tottenham did pull a goal back late on when David Bentley’s free-kick was inadvertently headed into his own net by Robert Huth.
