Middlesbrough 3 Hull 1

Striker Marlon King piled the pressure on his former club by sealing a vital win for Middlesbrough.

Boro took an early lead when Afonso Alves’s shot was parried but Tuncay Sanli put in the rebound (3), only for Alberto Manucho to head Hull level (9).

Matthew Bates got his first senior goal from a Tony McMahon corner (29), before King boosted Boro’s survival chances with a shot from inside the box (90).

Portsmouth 2 West Brom 2

Bottom-club West Brom’s inability to hold on to a lead prevented them from narrowing the gap on Newcastle.

Niko Kranjcar went close to firing Pompey ahead but his effort rattled the post, before Younes Kaboul broke the deadlock with a fierce drive (33).

Jonathan Greening (48) equalised and Chris Brunt’s free-kick made it two (62) before Kranjcar’s free-kick rescued a point three minutes later.
