We all remember this moment probably one of the biggest shocks in english football as eric cantona took the law into his own hands.

Cantona was sent off by the referee for a vengeful kick on Palace defender Richard Shaw after Shaw had pulled his shirt. As he was walking towards the tunnel, he launched a ‘kung-fu’ style kick into the crowd, at Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons, followed by a series of punches. The infamous photograph of the moment Cantona’s foot connected with Simmons, was used with permission on the front cover of Ash’s single “Kung Fu”. The front cover alone generated publicity in the British rock press, which helped the band get to number 57 in charts.

Cantona is often regarded as having played a major talismanic role in the revival of Manchester United as a footballing powerhouse and he enjoys iconic status at the club and in English football. In 2001, he was voted as Manchester United’s player of the century and is affectionately named the mighty “King Eric”. He is the current manager of the France beach soccer team one day you never know he might return to manage.
