Newcastle 0 – 0 Portsmouth

Newcastle remain deep in relegation danger, though the woodwork saved them from defeat in a high-tempo encounter.

Richard Hughes headed a corner against the post, and Peter Crouch wasted a fine chance as Pompey nearly made the hosts pay for their profligacy.

Michael Owen shot tamely at David James when through on goal and Obafemi Martins blazed over, while Damien Duff forced a fine save with a low drive.
Shearer had set his side the task of winning their remaining three home games to drag themselves out of relegation trouble but, having fallen at the first hurdle, they now face the daunting prospect of having to get something at Liverpool on Sunday.
