barton-red-card Newcastle have announced midfielder Joey Barton has been suspended from the club until further notice.

The controversial 26-year-old, who was sent off for a reckless challenge on Liverpool’s Xabi Alonso, has been told to stay away as Alan Shearer attempts to save the club from relegation.

Barton was already due to miss the remaining three games of Newcastle’s battle against relegation from the Barclays Premier League through suspension and he may have played his last match for the club after being sent off at Anfield for an ugly lunge at Xabi Alonso.

Shearer, the Newcastle manager, immediately condemned the player in his post-match press conference, but it emerged last night that they had also exchanged words in the dressing-room, with Barton taking exception to the former England captain’s accusations of cowardice

A short club statement read: “Newcastle United can confirm that Joey Barton has been suspended from the club until further notice.

“The club will be making no further comment on the matter at this time.”

‘He deserved to be sent off, he has let himself and the club down,” Shearer fumed after the loss at Anfield.

“He was not unlucky, the referee was spot-on. There was no need for him to do that in such a position.

“It was a red card and I was not happy. He has apologised, but he is suspended for the rest of the season now.”
