Newcastle 1 v Hull 2

The home fans conducted several protests before, during and after the game at St James’ Park against owner Mike Ashley following Kevin Keegan’s recent exit and their mood will not have been lifted by a poor display against the Premier League new boys.

Danny Guthrie was also sent off for a shocking late challenge on Craig Fagan as things appear to go from bad to worse for the Magpies.

King’s first-half penalty, after Peter Halmosi was fouled by Nicky Butt, lit up a fairly dull opening 45 minutes on the pitch and came after Guthrie and Owen had wasted great chances at the other end.
During the break and in the opening minutes of the first half, a large anti-Ashley banner was paraded around the ground to huge applause and the off-field distractions appeared to affect the players as King extended Hull’s lead on 55 minutes.
Latching onto a long ball, the former Watford hot-shot turned well before firing past Shay Given much to the delight of the visiting fans.
Xisco managed to pull one back with nine minutes remaining after Charles N’Zogbia’s shot came back off the post but Newcastle couldn’t find another and Guthrie’s poor late challenge to earn him a red card summed up their day.
