Liverpool maintained their grip on first place the Premier League table with a 5-1 win against a toothless Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Sunday. Reds captain Steven Gerrard scored twice and had had it not been for Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given, the hosts could have been on the wrong end of a double-figure disaster after being completely outclassed. The Reds grabbed a four-point advantage. Goals from Steven Gerrard and Sami Hyypia, Ryan Babel also a Xabi Alonso penalty helped the Reds to a score-line that frankly flattered a disjointed and listless Toon, whose token reply came from David Edgar.Liverpool utterly dominated the match but were denied a rugby score by some incredible goalkeeping by Shay Given.Steven Gerrard put the Reds ahead with a crisp shot (31) and Sami Hyypia doubled the lead with a header (36), before David Edgar replied on the stroke of half-time for Newcastle with a converted cornor.
Ryan Babel poked home from close range (50), before Gerrard’s neat finish (66) and Xabi Alonso’s penalty (77) sealed the rout.Rampant Liverpool ensured they finished 2008 top of the Barclays Premier League in style even without torres and keane is this liverpools time
