Several investors are set to come in with offers to buy Newcastle United after Mike Ashley put the club up for sale yesterday, according to several market commentators.

The London-based businessman, who owns merchandise trading company Sport Direct, said he is looking for a way out of the club after being the target of fan protests and negative chants on the terraces.

Ashley has also revealed he fears for the safety of himself and his family if he were to attend a match at St James’ Park.

In his impassioned statement revealing his intentions to sell the club, Ashley said he was unsure if he would be able to find a buyer.

However, several interested parties are already rumoured to have held initial discussions with the Magpies owner – including Liverpool’s former suitors Dubai International Capital (DIC).
