Striker Djibril Cisse headed home his 11th goal of the season as Sunderland won a vital relegation six-pointer.

The Frenchman nodded in at the far post in first-half stoppage time, after Danny Collins had flicked on a centre put in by midfielder Andy Reid (45).

Hull had enjoyed the better chances with Craig Gordon parrying Kevin Kilbane’s header and Michael Turner having an effort cleared off the line.

striker Diego Tristan claimed a late equaliser for West Ham to stretch Villa’s winless run to eight games.

Kick-off was delayed as the hosts were forced to don their all-white third strip after a colour clash, but Emile Heskey gave them an early lead (11).

Heskey and Ashley Young were both denied by the woodwork before Tristan rifled home (85) and Mark Noble was denied by keeper Brad Friedel late on.

Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer produced an inspired display against his former club who stay in the relegation zone.

The Australia international kept out a low shot from Jeremie Aliadiere from Tuncay Sanli’s cut-back and tipped over a fierce Stewart Downing drive.

It was Fulham who went closest to taking the three points when an Andy Johnson shot deflected off David Wheater and hit the post.

Portsmouth 1 Bolton 0

Portsmouth’s hopes of avoiding the drop were given a massive boost after Kanu’s strike sealed three vital points.

The hosts started in determined mood and Glen Johnson was denied by three fine saves from Jussi Jaaskelainen before the interval.

Pompey pressed on and got their reward when Nadir Belhadj’s header was bundled home by Kanu (78). Peter Crouch then went close to a second moments later.

Portsmouth v Bolton – Megson

Stoke 1 Blackburn 0

Liam Lawrence struck the only goal of the game as Stoke took a giant stride towards staying in the top flight.

The midfielder got on the end of a flick by James Beattie inside the area and drilled the ball home (75) to worsen Blackburn’s own relegation woes.

Potters keeper Thomas Sorensen pulled off a good stop to prevent an Abdoulaye Faye own goal, while Lawrence brought a superb save out of Paul Robinson.  See the gears of war 2 celebration!
