Rafa wants quick deal

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez wants his contract negotiations to be brought to a positive conclusion – and denies he wants control of transfers.

The Spaniard’s deal runs out in 2010, and he believes the uncertainty over his future is hampering the Anfield club’s long-term planning.

Benitez told the Guardian: “When people realise a manager only has a year left, then he is dead.”

Fernando Torres has thanked boss Rafael Benitez for bringing him to England and helping him develop as a player.

The Spain striker scored 33 times in his debut season, but he has struggled to overcome hamstring injuries this time around – scoring just nine.

But he told FourFourTwo: “My natural qualities – speed, power – fit the Premier League. I’ve learned a lot. It has been a pleasure to work with Rafa.”

Berlin suits Reds loanee
Striker Andriy Voronin claims he has opened talks with Hertha Berlin over extending his loan from Liverpool.

The Ukrainian is on a season-long loan deal and scored twice in the 2-1 win over Bayern Munich at the weekend which sent Hertha top of the Bundesliga.

After speaking with Hertha officials, Voronin told Bild: “I think we are on a positive path. There is a willingness on both sides to continue further.”
