New York’s road to the final: After a lackluster season riddled with more questions than answers, New York sneaked into the playoffs on the last day of league play. Thanks to D.C. United hitting the post three times against Columbus and losing 1-0, NY was able to grab the second wild card spot. New York opened the playoffs against Houston, the top seed in the west. After a 1-1 result at home in the first leg of the Western Conference semi-finals, NY and Dane Richards exploded on the scene in Houston. Erupting in a shocking 4-0 result to book their ticket into the Western Conference finals. There they met the boys from Utah. In one of the most exciting games seen to date in MLS, NY came out ahead thanks to a 29th minute strike from Dave Van den Bergh. NY was able to survive the RSL offense for the last 60 and book their place in MLS Cup ’08.

Columbus’ road to the final: League Champions rarely do the double. However this has been something of a magical season for Crew. Led by Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s 7 goals, 19 assists, Crew accumulated 17 wins and 57 points and a goal differential of plus 14 in league play. Columbus began their run to the final with a first round fixture with Kansas City. After a 1-1 draw on the road, Columbus was able to put Kansas City’s playoff lives to bed with a 2-0 win at home. In the Eastern Conference final, Columbus met up with Chicago Fire. After giving up an early first half goal to Chicago, Columbus put together a second half rally and net two, thanks to Defender of the Year, Chad Marshall, and grab the winner thanks to Eddie Gaven.

History: This is the first time either of these teams have been in the final.

New York won the season series 2-1, winning both games at home.
