goals from captain Robbie Keane, one a highly controversial penalty, saw the Republic of Ireland come from behind to earn a 2-1 victory over Georgia at Croke Park and move level with Italy at the top of Group 8 of the World Cup qualifiers.

 Keane notched a second- half double to put the Republic joint top in group eight with Italy.

The Spurs striker slid home a penalty after Ucha Lobjanidze had been harshly penalised for handball (73), and then headed home an Aiden McGeady corner to ease Irish nerves (78).

Georgia had taken the lead after just 47 seconds when Alexander Iashvili took advantage of Stephen Kelly’s mistake.

Trapattoni hails Keane

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni saluted skipper Robbie Keane after his double helped his side battle back to beat Georgia 2-1.

The victory in Dublin was enough to put the Irish level on points at the top of Group Eight with Italy.
