seatle sounders win cup 150x150 Seattle Sounders 2 1 DC United Wicks on Montero stampFreddy Montero and Roger Levesque scored to give the expansion Sounders a 2-1 win over D.C. United in the U.S. Open Cup final tonight at RFK.

The young Colombian star scored off a rebound in the 67th minute, and Levesque killedt he game off in the 85th before DC pulled a goal back late. Seattle joined Bob Bradley’s 1998 Chicago Fire as the only clubs to win the Open Cup in their debut season.

The turning point of the match happened halfway through the second half. United were dominating the proceedings in the half, but in one fell swoop, they were a goal down, and had their keeper sent off, as Josh Wicks stomped on Fredy Montero after the goal!

“I did not see it . But some of our guys said they saw it,” said United coach Tom Soehn after the match. “A player does not come before the team, and he’s got to be smarter than that.”
