Sky’s Sunday Supplement: United have “defensive problems, why the Champions League not boring & Chelsea’s thin aging squad

March 15, 2009 | Filed Under: UK Box Update

Unsurprisingly, the first topic tabled for the talking heads was Liverpool’s big win at Old Trafford. Andy Dunn (NOTW) said the result has “turned a procession into a race again” while again cementing Benitez’s reputation amongst the Liverpool fans as well as dispelling the belief that Manchester United are untouchable. Oliver Holt (Daily Mirror) and Rob Draper (Mail on Sunday) then flagged up the individual defensive errors seen in the United backline this weekend, leaving Andy Dunn to claim there are frailties in Ferguson’s defence.

The dominance of the English teams in the Champions League was the second subject up for dissection. Looking for reasons to this pattern, Rob Draper picked up the baton shouting “money is the obvious answer” before arguing that higher levels of fitness in the Premier League is being proved in Europe. Oliver Holt challenged the notion the English teams are making the competition boring, crowing “it’s our turn now. I didn’t hear too many people complaining when Serie A teams won it the whole time. Or when La Liga was the dominant force.” Andy Dunn chirped up with the self-aware comment that the Big Four’s success is not patriotic due to the huge foreign presence in those squads, before congratulating the managers presiding in the Premier League as being the best in the business.

The final subject chewed over was a critique of Chelsea’s thin and aging squad. Andy Dunn asked “what are Chelsea about? Who knows what they exist for?” with Oliver Holt jumping on the bandwagon slurring the club as not having “a sense of progress.” Dunn then took a second swipe at the Blues arguing “it is very hard to have affection for them.”
