Kenwyne Jones celebrated his return to the Sunderland line-up with a headed effort against 10-man battlers Stoke.
The visitors were unable to hold out after Matthew Etherington was ordered off for violent conduct and Henri Camara hit the bar with a sitter.
Jones’s goal came after the hosts had been denied a penalty for handball by Danny Pugh but David Healy soothed any nerves with a late second
